About Us

Who We Are

Georgie McNiece, Alannah Santomartino & Madelene Patsuris

As part of one of our final units in our bachelor of occupational therapy, Georgie, Alannah and Madelene worked together to gather information in order to assist future generations of students to understand the emerging roles and employment options outside of the ‘traditional’ occupational therapy setting. This website will provide viewers with relevant information about the skills required to work in these ‘non-traditional’ areas, and provide a community whereby people can interact with one another to gain knowledge and build networks.

But first, what is a non-traditional occupational therapy role? As defined by Smith et. al, 2014, the definition of a non-traditional placement or work is where there is emerging practice areas. These include areas such as non-government organisations such as Vision Australia or areas where OT supervision is not usually provided. The term ‘non-traditional’ does not necessarily mean that the OT practice has changed, but that there are emerging areas of OT, areas where OT could greatly benefit the organisation.

These ‘non-traditional’ areas of practice do not mean that the skills you learn throughout your university careers become irrelevant. Many occupational therapy skills are transferrable throughout a variety of areas, which will also be explored throughout this website.
